   Anything close enough to a fire will probably burn

   Shells will blacken and eventually burn if placed directly in a fire but if they are placed in such a way that they are not placed directly in the flames, I don’t see a problem.

   My concern would be the material that they are hung from…the shells may not burn easily but the string that they are dangling from could be a fire hazard.
