Will monogramming a cheap felt stocking cause it to fall apart?

I made stockings for my children out of of cheap crafting felt & I am worried if I put a monogram on it, it may cause the monogram to pull or separate from the fabric along the edge where the needle has gone in. If it does so, I’m afraid it will end up looking like a stencil. Anyone have experience machine embroidering felt?

Honestly, I’d say it will probably fall apart depending on whether you do it by hand or machine. If you have a really high-grade machine, it might have a felt setting. If not, you’re better off attempting it by hand, which you should have better luck keeping it together, but still no guarantees. You could always just get some cheap fabric and sew up some stockings instead of using felt, it shouldn’t be any more expensive.

why not just try painting out the monogram? use fabric paints.
or, you can make your own acrylic paint at home by mixing PVA glue in poster colors.
you could even add some glitter, etc. before the paint dries [or later] – kids would love that.

    hope this helps
all the best & have fun

I used the glitter pens for decorating fabrics. They have held up for 10 years for most of them. I had all the children, their spouses and children here one Christmas and made everyone matching stockings.

Machine embroidery should not make the felt fall apart. Do wide around once and see if it looks like you want then do it over again closer. It should be ok. Felt, even the really cheap stuff should not disintegrate with stitching it.

I do a lot of machine embroidery. It really doesn’t matter if your material is cheap or not. I do embroider or monogram cheap Xmas stockings for my nieces and nephews. I bought those $2 red x’mas stockings and they turn out fine. What you should do is use a backing and hoop the stockings when you embroider them. The backing and the hoop will help your material not to pull.

Use a cut away stabilizer on the back of the felt.

Tear away stabilizer will perforate at every stitch and will not hold as well as the cut away.

After you have done the monogram, trim away the stabilizer.

Also trim (not too close to the end stitch/knot) the jumps stitches on the back of the embroidery so the children do not get their little fingers caught in the thread.

Always test before going for the real thing.

The site I am providing has a lot of tips and techniques for machine embroidery and I found one for stockings made from felt.

    Have fun and enjoy!
