What is an eBook? Can you create one?
You may have heard the word eBook online, but do you really know what they are, and how can they help your craft business?
An eBook, put simply, is an electronic book you can read on your computer. It is sold directly to customers by email, usually as a PDF (Adobe Acrobat) file. Buyers will receive the file almost instantly after purchase, and will be able to read on their computer screen, and print the parts they wish. eBooks usually contain practical information that can be used immediately.
What does that mean for you? Well, if you are skilled in a particular craft or technique, it’s a perfect occasion for you to share your knowledge, and earn some extra money to feed the addiction. You only need to be able to explain well and to use a word processor.
Also, if you already sell patterns, a detailed eBook may be a good addition to your line of products. If you sell pattern, you can already explain well and have good knowledge of your craft. You could even throw in a few patterns as a bonus.
eBooks are long to write, but they have an advantage over patterns : they can sell for more. In the right places, you can easily get 20$-30$ for every copy you sell. With that high a price, you have a lot of breathing space to buy some publicity or give even more value to your customers
There are several ways of creating a PDF eBook (the most popular format). If you want to splurge, you can buy the full version of Adobe Acrobat. Or if, like me, you’re a cheapskate, many word processing programs (like the free Open Office) can convert documents to PDF for free!
There are many marketplaces to sell eBooks, some of them being Clickbank, Tradebit and E-Junkie. They will process the payment for you, and will allow other people to sell your eBook for a cut of the profit. That way, you can have many sellers working for you, bringing in even more sales!
Or you could sell your eBook via eBay or your website and accept payments directly via PayPal.
So, get writing! If you do end up writing an eBook, please mention it in the comment, I would like to know.
Happy craft selling,
Cindy
