what is a good way to make a fake ‘gem’ for a craft project?

I need to make a ‘ruby’ a little bigger than a chicken egg, but it can be a half globe or an oval, doesn’t have to be an egg shape, for a craft project. Needs to be out of something soft enough to carve into but hard enough to feel hard to the touch, no jello like stuff. Ideally it would be atleast semi transparent so it have that gem look to it. Any suggestions on how to make such a faux gemstone?

    Clear Silicone caulk.

Dye styrofoam, shape, then heavy glaze.

I suggest buying a fake plastic gem since you aren’t going to be able to make anything that looks as good.

There is every color synthetic gem, but red corundum the size of an egg will be pretty pricey. Take a look in the clasisified ads in “Rock and Gem” magazine. Synthetic rubies can be affordable- more so than natural ones.

Get some red lucite at a plastic store like Tap Plastics and shape it with a low-speed sander. Polish it with a cotton buffer charged with jeweler’s rouge. If this is to be a stage prob, red wax might do.
