what in the world is this thing called?

I started a craft of some sort but I cant figure out what it is called. I need to search it on the internet to see if im doing it right. You thread yarn through a needle with an over sized eye, and you follow a pattern printed on some kind of cloth. please help me im doing it as a gift for my mother and i want to make sure im doing it right. thanx = )
I got this thing from an old lady. she sold it to me and it’s like a billion years old and on the box it says crewing or some thing like that and i looked it up on the internet and the only thing i could find was business stuff. I threw the box away weeks ago and I now it wasnt cross stich or needle point

    I believe it could be “punchneedle” or “needlecraft” depending on what exactly you are doing.

    Sounds like it is either cross stitch or embroidery. With cross stitch you can see the holes in the fabric called Aida cloth. Embroidery is usually done on cotton or linen.

    Your description sounds like a craft called needle point cross stitching. The needle is a slightly blunt point that can go through the material but does not tear or rip the material. You use colored yarn mostly and yes, you follow a design on the cloth. Try going to Yahoo definitions for “needle point work” where they actually give a quick course on how to do it. Good luck.
