I would check out your local craft stores, especially Jo-Ann Fabrics or Michaels, as they usually have a sizable section of kids crafts. Also look at websites like http://www.familyfun.com for ideas–they usually have some cute ideas for all ages and are probably cheaper than the stores.
try this site it has a kids section…. its a great site
maybe one of those puzzles that are like hundreds of pieces, usually have cool pictures when theyre done. Or like the other person said, craft stores like michaels and jo-anns has a lot of selection.
u can get markers and some construction paper and let them draw or if u have some spare yarn, buttons or beads and paper bags you can make puppets and have a little puppet show or you could make ur own paper first u have to tear up some paper and kids love to tear up paper and then u put the paper pices into a container w/ water and then dump the paper and water over a seive then u let it dry and u have paper and the cool thing about it is that u can shape it however u like while its wet and it will dry that way!
Have you checked out the Oriental Trading Company’s catalog? They have lots of crafts for various projects that aren’t too expensive.
Have you thought about crafts that teach? Such as planting seeds? We took a mason jar and a paper towel soaked in water. We placed the towel on the inside of the jar and put seeds between the towel and jar. Then we filled with dirt. The kids could watch the seed sprout and grow roots.
We also taught the kids about the value of recycling. We “planted” various things such as paper, pieces of plastic (from soda bottles and milk bottles) pieces of glass and metal (such as bottle caps). We took a tub – somewhat like you get in a hospital as a personal wash basin, and we filled it with potting soil and planted the various items. We had the kids water it from time to time and stir it up too, so they could see what happens to the items that “biodegrade” or not. It was an interesting experiment for them.
At the beginning of the year, we took small Easter baskets and lined them with plastic wrap, filled it with potting soil and grass seed. We had the kids water it regularly and by Easter, they had a basket full of Easter Grass. Then we dyed eggs and put them in their baskets. They kids enjoyed this.
Another thing to do is to teach them to knit, crochet, or embroider. You could try finger knitting too.
Building things with craft sticks is fun, as is making items with play dough – including home made dough.
Get pine cones, peanut butter, flour and bird seeds, and ribbon.
Mix the seed into the peanut butter and flour, so that it is like a bread dough.
Push it into the petals of the pine cone and tie the ribbon to the pine cone so it can hang.
Store in the freezer till winter.
Hang on the trees in the winter and the birds will come eat off it. Tie it good or the squirrls will take off with them.
We enjoy making origami projects… it only costs the paper itself! It can be very difficult to find decent directions though. Try this site for some videos on several easy designs: http://www.origami-videos.com
