What can i put on a cardboard tube like found in the center of papertowels that would make it harder?

I have a cardboard tube that was in the center of my paper towels. I want to make it more durable for a craft project Im working on. What can i put on it to make it more stiff?

    Clear varnish or white glue mixed with water….

    paint it on thinly, allow to dry and then paint on another layer until you have it at the hardness you require.

    You could cover it with wheat paste and newspaper. When it dries you can paint it or
    wrap it with tissue paper.

    You could also cut another tube up the middle and coat the inside with glue and wrap it around the tube you are trying to strengthen.
