What are some really unique DIY clothing projects that people don’t normally think of?

I don’t have a ton of money so I was thinking of making/altering my old/thrifted clothes. The articles on About.com aren’t enough for me, they’re too plain and there’s not enough stuff for guys. I like a lot of fashion from the 60′s to the early 2000′s, I like punk fashion, glam rock, fashioncore/scene, basically anything inspired by rock or even pop culture and high fashion.

I want to DIY nearly everything I have in my closet and everything I wear. I’ve gotten ideas like painting my jeans, cutting up and putting holes on the sides on an XL tshirt and lacing it up to make a more fitted tank top, getting knock off shoes and painting/sewing patches onto them, and taking screens off old tshirts and putting them on hoodies.

I’m sick of everything I want to buy from a store being too expensive for me and the cheaper versions fall apart or are just not the quality I want, or doesn’t have enough spark. There’s a lot of stuff I could just DIY but I’m sort of lost on where to start on some things. I’ve searched Google a million times and I haven’t stumbled upon any awesome blogs that give tutorials on how to make things you don’t see every day.

If anyone could recommend any DIY fashion and crafts to me that would be amazing :)
I actually haven’t tried the pants/shoes paintings…. Yet. I’m about to very soon for something I want to wear to the Pride Parade. I’d totes tell what it is, but I don’t want anyone to take my idea until I’ve worn it myself. :) Could I just get a dog chain from Family Dollar for like $2? Lol.
I’m just gonna say this again where it might be more noticeable; I’m a guy. If you have anything specifically unisex/male, that would rock. :)

Darn. I make most of my own clothes, but all my ideas flew straight out the window when you said “guy.” My favorite skirt pattern just wouldn’t flatter you at all, I’m afraid.

From some jewelry-supply places you can get aluminum chain in large pieces for good prices. Can you stitch chain to the outside seams of your jeans or hang it from pocket to pocket? It weighs almost nothing and washes well. Aluminum doesn’t rust, as I recall. It’s great to decorate a denim jacket, too.

I’m guessing you’ve already tried the fabric-paint handprints and shoeprints. It’s fun to put them in funny places. A painted shoeprint on the butt of your jeans is fun. Getting the painted shoeprints on the shoulders of a t-shirt is tricky, but gives a really fun effect. The Tulip Brand Soft paints are good for stuff like that because they are truly opaque. They also dry soft and don’t crack when washed.

Look at some of the ‘trashionista’ and ‘upcycling’ sites – tons of cool ideas there, and they usually give some info on how they did it even if they don’t give instructions. Start here, and follow links until your head’s swimming.

Browse the clothing items on etsy.com, too – also very inspirational.
    Good luck.

you might stumble upon something at etsy you like and go from there. http://www.etsy.com has tons of cute handmade guy wear. Atleast it can give you a start on ideas and where to put that or this, etc. Good luck :)

I’d definitely also check out some of the boards at Craftster.org. There are boards there in several of the categories you mentioned, and most of the members/readers and youngish people so into a lot of the stuff you might be into too.

From this page, on the lower right there, check out some of the following boards for example… and there are often many sub-boards under each board:
    http://www.craftster.org/forum

    …CLOTHING (including “reconstructed” clothing)
    …REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING
…IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES (for clothing, etc)
    …JEWELRY AND TRINKETS
    …PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS
    and maybe:
    …FIBER ARTS
…POLYMER CLAY > Polymer Clay (this kind of clay can be made to look like anything from glittery stuff to metal, gemstones, leather, rock, ivory/etc/etc, as well as being used with other materials and techniques)
…HOME SWEET HOME (interior and exterior decorating, yard art, pet crafts, etc)
    …SEWING IN GENERAL

    HTH,
    Diane B.
