Try origami. Most kids do that.

Paper crafting of all kinds. Scrap-booking, making journals, book covers, collages, card
making are all things that a kid would have fun doing. Photos of them, their friends, activities, vacations, their pets, to name a few, are things they really like showing to others. Much of this can be done with simple inexpensive supplies. Even junk mail can be Incorporated in these crafts.

My favorite crafting hobby as a girl was latch hooking! I couldn’t quit knit but once I got the latch hook rhythm down…boy did I feel like I was accomplishing something else, as each row materialized in my lap. Time flew by. I couldn’t believe it was me who had ended up with such a professional looking piece.
I DO hope you consider that. A latch hook kit in a box.

Make fabric bowls! The bowls are colorful, sturdy, and fun to make! They can be used to hold toys, snacks, and other items. Here’s step-by-step how to make them: http://site.escapadedirect.com/blog2/index.php/2009/11/04/art-works-series-activity-11-fabric-bowls/

Another idea is to make worry dolls. Worry dolls are small colorful dolls that you put under your pillow at night to take your worries away. You could make a bunch of these dolls, then donate them to a local children’s hospital for the sick kids that are there. Here’s how to make them: http://site.escapadedirect.com/blog2/index.php/2009/11/18/art-works-series-activity-12-worry-dolls/

Another idea is collages. Recycle old magazines and make collages that represent things you love or things you are thankful for. Here are instructions, complete with pictures: http://site.escapadedirect.com/blog2/2009/11/25/art-works-series-activity-13-thankful-collage/

For lots more ideas like these, check out our Art Works! Series at: http://site.escapadedirect.com/blog2/category/educational-adventures/art-works-series-educational-adventures/

I hope these ideas help! Have fun creating!

I remember when I was 8years old and wanted to do something crafty… Well, besides origami and sculpturing – I tried penpalling. It’s a bit extraordinary but it worked really well for me – learning English as a new language and doing crafty things to make my letters more interesting. You can check out http://www.sandbook.net which is a friendly website for penpalling and swapping.
