What are craft feathers made out of?

You know those multicolored feathers that kids often use for crafts? What are those made from, anyway?
Are they seriously real? How do they make them all colorful and clean enough to be used by children?

    feathers, soap and dye.

    They are real. I do not yet know of a synthetic feather.

    Very often, they’re made from chicken feathers, from animals which are slaughtered for meat. Since these are usually caged animals, it’s easy to collect the feathers and dye them for crafts. It’s a matter of opinion whether they’re clean enough to be used by children.
    Life can be very cheap.
