Selling Patterns VS Selling Crafted Items
You wish to sell your crafts for money, but don’t like to make the same thing more than once or twice? Getting bored when trying to craft for profit, making the same thing over and over? You may have more success trying to sell craft patterns or kits instead. Here are a few points you may want to consider :
When you create a craft pattern, you only need to do the work once. You may then sell the same thing again and again and get money each time. If you sell crafted items, you can only sell it one time. If you want to sell more, you need to make more. It’s also easier to make samples of your work available if you sell patterns, you only need to make it downloadable.
But patterns takes more time to create. You need to craft the item, taking careful notes along the way, and possibly pictures, and a good picture of the finished item. After all of that, you need to transcribe your notes into a pattern that can be easily followed, with a good layout and style. When you simply craft items for sale, you don’t have as many steps, you can focus on your crafting if it’s the part you like.
With patterns, you can focus on new, exclusive designs for each new project. They may not all yield a great pattern, not all ideas can be good, but you get the satisfaction of creating something new. Yes, you can get the same time when you sell your crafts, you do need to create new items for your product line for time to time. But with a patterns, you can create something long to make or expensive since you’re not paying for the materials every time if that’s what you like.
Still, it may take you longer to make your money with patterns. There are a lot more buyers of finished items out there, and you have competition from every free pattern site. You will have to sell for less that you would sell a crafted item, and you will have to compensate by selling more pattern and promoting more.
If you can’t decide, you can always do both! You will be able to see with time which option you prefer the most, or will opt to keep both. There is nothing wrong with giving buyers a choice.
Happy craft selling,
Cindy
