I like those types of crafts too!

One thing I love doing is “making boxes.”

You can either use a pre-made box (like a small sturdy box from a food product, package that came in the mail, etc). Or fashion your own by cutting pieces of cardboard, pinning it together, then fastening it with glue.

Then you take some cool looking paper (that you bought, tissue paper from a Victoria’s secret shopping bag, or paper that you sponge painted yourself, etc) and glue it to the box using a decoupage glue, such as Mod Podge (can buy at any craft store, about $3-4). Then brush the glue over the paper too for a nice finished look. I recommend using some kind of sealant such as poly urethane (recommended but not necessary) to seal it.

Voila, you have a neat little trinket box. I also like saving some of the paper and using it on corresponding items, such as a journal, pen, ashtray, etc, to have a matching set, and they make great gifts.

Edit* I just took some pictures to show you a box I made. For these ones, I cut up origami paper. Usually I just cover each side with a whole piece though, guess I was feeling extra creative that day :)

How about crochet? It’s pretty easy to learn and cheap to get started. You can make things for children, Teens or adults, your home or even gifts for friends.

You can get a learn how to crochet pamplet about $3, a hook size H about $1.50 (used frequently in patterns) and one or two skeins of yarn about $2-3 each, Just get the cheaper yarns to begin with. So you can get everything you need to start for about $10. Those pamplets (sold by the yarn) show you the stitches with how to directions for each stitch and they have a few patterns with all the abbreviations explained.

If you like it, crocheting is a talent that you will carry with you through life and it’s a good take along hobby for those out of town visits. In fact you can plan to make a gift (something small like coasters, potholders, hats, gloves etc.) for those you are visiting and get it finished while there, so you wont have to mail it.

If your allowed to go to yahoo groups there is an excellent crochet group called Crochet-heaven. You could have your mom check it out first if she wants to. It is a family friendly group, with some other young members too. The people there will be happy to help you if you don’t understand how to read a pattern or don’t grasp what it means. They are a great bunch of people there.
