Making candles from lard/tallow?

I’m considering using lard or other soft fats as a substitute for candle wax, either alone or with paraffin. I remember reading an article in a crafts magazine years ago that described a method of making soft fats hard, it called for saltpeter, and I believe some other chemical to treat the fat and make it harder and burn with less smoke. anyone remember the method?

I have no idea of the accuracy of the information. I use wax or soy wax when making mine.
