leather working/craft hobby question?

leather working question?
I’m strongly considering taking up leather work as a hobby. I would like to make sandals and other type of simple footwear for myself. Now here’s the question. I know this may sound ghetto. I have had the idea of getting practice leather well, I have gotten some already. When I see a leather couch in the garbage area I’ve gotten my pocket knife and helped myself to it. I already have a few square yards of couch soft leather material.

Is this a good idea to use this crap leather as practice material cutting patterns ETC? I know, it’s ghetto. Well, ghetto and hip, as I’m a believer in recycling.

Thanks.

As someone mentioned, I have confirmed that the leather pieces I have are leather and not vinyl. Vynil does not have suede in the backside.

The thing is, not all couches are leather, many are vinyl.

As long as it’s leather, there’s nothing wrong in using it for practice work. However, keep in mind that it may be a different thickness and be treated differently from what you will ultimately use.
