Look for the “universal” yarn code. According to the Lion website, Cupcake is a 4, so you can substitute any worsted weight (4) yarn for it. The yarn code is found in the picture of the skein of yarn on the label.

Not all stores name the brands the same. If you know what the material is composed of it will help. By composed I mean is it 2, 3, or 4 ply. If you can find this out it would let you know if it is 2 or 3 you would look for baby yarn or sports and most of the others will be the four ply and when you go to the store all you would have to do is twist a part of the yarn and see how many threads are in it. Hope this helps.

Cupcake is a worsted weight yarn, but very soft. Look for Pound of Love for an equivalent texture. If the yarn label says 16sts/23 rows = 4″ with #8 needles and is a #4 yarn, you should be safe.

It sounds like these people have answered your question, but I just wanted to share this link for future reference. It’s a crochet newsletter, but she talks about yarn weights and what to do if you need to substitute yarns. Finding a yarn substitute is good for knitters and crocheters!

By the way, looking for a 2-, 3-, or 4-ply yarn will not solve your problem. I have used yarns that were lighter than worsted weight, but they were 6-ply. Just an FYI.

I’d recommend cotton-ease. It’s a great yarn for kids and adult garments, and the price is pocket friendly. There’s not a huge assortment of colors, I’d say thats the only downfall. It’s also by lion brand, and you should be able to find it at Michael’s.
