Is the decorative coloured sand sold at craft stores made out of real sand, or something else?

…and if something else, I’d be interested to know what.

   its real sand, just use food coloring. here is a recipe if you want to make it.

   The sand sold in craft store are colored using food color and other chemical dyes.

   To get natural colors one would have to trot the globe to collect. The site mentioned by Aerryl gives you more information about sand coloring.
