How should I go about starting up a new hobby – Scrapbooking?

I asked for scrapbooking things for Christmas..yes, I know it’s JUNE! LOL I received some paper, stickers, a baby bok kit and a nice printer to print out pictures from my camera. I’m a bit overwhelmed!! How do I start??? What kind of cutting things do I need? I really want to start, but I have no idea how to do it. =)

I would go to hobby lobby or some similar crafty place. They should have everything you need. Wal-mart has that stuff as well, but a crafts place has so much more. You could even go to an actual scrap book store if you have one in your area. Some places offer classes.

I like to use scissors that have a pattern on the edge.
You can also get hole punchers in many different shapes.
There are so many other things…glitter, die-cuts, etc.

The cutter that you probably would like would be this kind that you slide:

There are a ton of websites that can help you out with this. There are a few basic supplies that you will need:
    Album and sheet protectors
Scissors or paper trimmer – you can get by with just a good pair of scissors but it is much much easier with a trimmer. You can get a decent one for 10.00 at walmart
Adhesive – you can use a basic glue stick, but invest a couple dollars in a scrapbook adhesive (walmart again) and you will be happier.
A good pen or computer fonts to do your journaling.

The main thing to remember is that you are doing this for yourself/children, not to impress everyone with your pages. That is great, but don’t stress yourself with it. Just have fun.

If you are looking for basics, find a creative memories class, you don’t have to buy anything. Also try looking for ideas at http://www.scrapjazz.com or http://www.splitcoaststampers.com Good luck, you will love this great, but addicting hobby!

When I was a beginner in scrapbooking I would check out scrapbooking magazines from the library. Such ones as “Memory Makers” and “Creative Keepsakes.” There are some good ideas and recommended materials to get your creative juices flowing. Really scrapbooking is a reflection of how YOU see your life and memories.
For basic start out, get a variety of non-patterned colored paper. A paper cutter. Vellum quote stacks are very useful. Patterned color paper. Lots of people enjoy using Die-cuts, they are easy an convenient. You can also buy computer programs that have a bunch of patterns and little extras you can print out and paste on your page.
The type of glue or adhesive you use is important. There are corner holders for pictures, also special picture adhesives that can be found in any scrapbook store. I prefer to use double sided sticky tape, it is not so expensive, easy to use, not damaging and easy to remove.
Each page will vary depending on the photograph itself. Some will need alot of assistance from little cut-outs and decor, others will hold the page in simplicity by itself.
Alot of local scrapbook shops will offer community scrapbooking. These are SOOOO helpful. You can learn others techniques and ideas, and then apply your personality to them. You also usually get discounts on supplies.
Hope this helps, good luck to you!

Depending on where you live I know that craft stores like Micheals and Jo-ann teach classes. They are like $25 a class. Plus a few people that are demostrators for Stampin” Up (www.staminup.com) and others would be glad to show you some techniques. A good web site is http://www.meetup.com you may find someone in your area that would love love love to help out. I love scrapbooking and I love sharing and helping others getting hooked to the hobby I am sure someone would be happy to meet up and help.
