Does anyone have any advice on how to make something like this and get the lettering on this to look good (I have bad handwriting and painting skills). Also how do I get a worn-look to it?

There are tons of rub on letters available at all the craft stores. Making memories has a wonderful selection: http://www.makingmemories.com/products/stickers/rubons_alpha.cfm and they work great on wood and paper. Good luck

In addition to the letter rubons that were suggested, you could use rubber stamps in letter shapes.

There is also computer printing onto acetate, or iron-on material or even onto extra-thin wood veneer. There is wood veneer as thin as heavy card stock.

The wood veneer would be easiest to distress, with keys and shark’s skin or sandpaper.

As far as distressing it goes, it’s simpler than it looks – first paint (acrylic from a craft store will work fine on either wood or chipboard) then verrrrry gently sand the entire surface to give it a softer look.

Rough it up a bit harder on the edges to remove some of the paint in random places where it logically might wear (around the corners in particular.) A nail file/buffer is sometimes easier to work with than sandpaper.

Good luck – that’s a crazy price for something you can easily make for a fraction of that amount!
