Help me interpret these knitting instructions, please? :)?
Hi!
I’m doing a hat pattern from here: http://www.canadianliving.com/crafts/knitting/knitted_toque_with_earflaps.php
I’m working on the toque now, and I’m on the step:
“Next: With MC, work even in St st until work from joining row measures 14.5 cm/5-3/4 ins, ending with right side facing for next row.”
Alright, so what does it mean with “work from joining row”? What is the joining row? Does it mean the row where I stopped working on my secondary color, and started back on MC/main color?
And then, “ending with right side facing the next row”… does that mean since I’m doing stockinette stitch with knit, purl, knit, purl, etc, I should end with knit, purl, knit?
I gladly report people who do not answer my question.

LMAO, Stargaze! I can’t believe I totally ignored that part! Thanks for pointing it out… wow, I feel silly.
auckland, thanks for explaining the other part, though!
I’m silly… this is the first thing I’m making, other than simple garter stitch squares.I… just really wanted to make a hat and learn as I went along. Bad idea.
Pretend thumbs up to all 3 of you.. I can’t thumb up yet.

The joining row is what the directions called the joining row —
With A, cast on 3 sts, move needle with sts to right hand, then, with wrong side facing, purl across 25 sts of one earflap on st holder; move needle with sts back to left hand, then cast on 10 sts; move needle with sts to right hand, then, with wrong side facing, purl across 25 sts of rem earflap on st holder; cast on 3 sts. 66 sts now on needle.
Yes the right side of this hat is the smooth side (the Vs of the stockinette stitch). In this case the rows begin with knit stitches.
Sounds to me like that’s exactly what it means, from the row where you joined in the current colour. As for the next bit, knit until you have those measurements and you have a the knit side facing you for the next row, i.e. your last row should be a purl row
The joining row is where you “joined” the color you are currently using. So measure the colored section you’re working on right now.
Since you are working st st (stocking/stockinette stitch), the right side rows are knit rows. They want you to end so that the next row is a right-side-facing row. So you end after a purl row and before the next knit row. When you turn, you’ll be ready to start a right-side-facing row.

Gotta hate spam, don’t you? I swear there’s been a big increase the last week or two. If you are the asker and you report an answer, it is automatically deleted. At least that’s something.
You got all very good answers, and I see it is all cleared up.
I do want to suggest that since you are such a new beginner, that you should take a basic beginning knitting class. There is so much you need to know, such as these instructions, and much more. You will get the correct instruction so you don’t form any bad habits which will get you into trouble later on. You will find classes at your LYS, at community centres, adult education, libraries, anywhere. Just look for them.
