Good type of wood to make a child doll house?

What type of wood should I look for? I am building a child’s doll house for a class project. Will basswood work? Is there a better solution? Cheaper is preferable, thanks.

   You don’t say what size you’re making the “child doll house.” Regular wood dollhouses are quite large, but you could be making a smaller or simpler one.
