Glitter is used a great deal in crafts & schools. Is glitter harmful to the lungs as asbestos is?

Martha Stewart has a new book GLITTER. When she decorates with glitter, she never wears a mask. I want to know if any research has been done to see if GLITTER can damage the lungs–especially of children.

I saw on her April Fools Day show that she glittered an entire chair! Wow! But most glitter is plastic, so it probably won’t harm you. alot of Martha’s glitter, however, is German glass glitter, and no, you really shouldn’t breathe it. Ordinary store bought glitter shouldn’t be a real problem, even for kids.

I just read an article about that!

The Occupational Safety And Health Administration released figures Monday indicating that record numbers of elementary-school art teachers are falling victim to pneumosparklyosis, commonly known as glitter lung.

When art teachers spend so much time in confined quarters with inadequate ventilation amid swirling clouds of glitter, it’s only a matter of time before their lungs start to suffer negative effects.

If glitter is absolutely essential to the craft project, try using a glitter pen, as the particles are less likely to become airborne.
