Games and crafts for kids ages 8-12?

I want to put a little “emergency activity box” aside in case our friend’s kids stop over with them, and to keep them occupied. The children range in age from 6-13. I don’t want to spend a lot of money, but just to have some things on hand. Suggestions?

Anything like Popsicle stick art, Construction paper, scissors, glue, sprinkle glitter, paint, old magazines for making collages, crayons, markers, yarn, paper plates for masks. Also socks, buttons and a needle and thread for a sock puppet. Hope this helps. Here are a couple of craft sites.
For games there is a game called “56 games”. It is a board game that comes with several boards and pieces and gives you rules for 56 actual games.

Puzzles, deck of cards (go to the library or search online for card games – spoons is really fun with kids), lego, crayons, sidewalk-chalk – if the weather’s nice and your HOA isn’t uptight; but really, for the most fun – RockBand. ;-)
