That is a good question. I have heard similar comments on pricing, however that also depends on whether or not you were able to buy your supplies in bulk or not. Ask yourself if you would consider paying the price you would be asking? If not it may be too much! You could also do a quick search in your area and see what others are charging for similar items and use that to help you determine your prices. Hope that helps.
“Cost of supplies times three” is a really good rule of thumb for pricing handmade items. It is, however, only a rule of thumb. Look honestly at your wreaths. If a stranger were selling one, would that be a reasonable price for you to pay? Would it be high or low or just right? Remember, the fact that YOU made them is irrelevant to your customers at a craft fair. (That they are handcrafted is important, but by whom is totally irrelevant.)
I make jewelry and work mostly in sterling wire (see my avatar.) I am a really good shopper, however, and buy on sale and at wholesale. I can make a pair of sterling silver dangly earrings (pretty ones, too, mind you) for about a buck. I cannot sell them for $3.- because no one would believe me that these were truly sterling. They still raise eyebrows at $6.99 and ask if it’s real. (Then, they snap them up!) The cross in my avatar costs about $1.75 to make, but sells easily for $15.- and probably would not sell so well if I priced it any less.
You don’t say where you are. That plays a big role in pricing your items. Some of my knit items, I have to price at only twice the cost of supplies — some even less than that. They’re nice, truly, but no one will pay that much for knitted stuff in SoCalifornia.
Is there anyone you know who was involved with this (or a similar local) craft fair last year? If so, that would be your best source for pricing info in your area.
