Does anyone have any craft show tips?

I’m going to Bob Evans Farm Festival on 10/10/08. We have a variety of items, handmade purses, place mats, candles, tarts etc. This is our first big craft show (40,000+ people) and we need all the help we can get. I appreciate everything guys!

Keep your space un-cluttered. Try to have things spaced out and neat. People won’t want to have to sort out things. When I do a craft show the space is usually small so instead of cluttering tables I try to go vertical using shelves. Make it appealing for people to come and see your crafts. Also bring lots of change 1′s 5′s. Try to bring a craft for yourself to do. People want you to be accessible but they don’t want to be stared at. It allows then to browse at their own place.

Make sure you have plenty of change.

Find out if they supply tables and chairs. Arrange ahead of time for power if you need it. If they supply the table, find out the dimensions so you can bring a tablecloth.

If you are going alone, find out in advance if they will have staff to take your lunch order or man your booth while you go to the bathroom or shop.

Have at least a hundred items. Buyers like a well stocked booth. Put a price tag on everything or a sign right there, if it’s all one price. If they have to ask… they won’t. Price tags can be handwritten, but anything bigger needs to be printed on the computer. I put my signs in picture frames. Hide packing materials and extra items under your tablecloth.

Have fun and talk to other vendors, but watch out for dirty tricks. 99.9% of the other crafters are wonderful people, but some will come over and loudly badmouth your product or try to keep you in a conversation so your customers would feel awkward interrupting, and you’ll lose the sale.

    Lots of good suggestions.

You may also want to check out this page at my site for lots of info and ideas:

(…my site is primarily about polymer clay, but most everything would translate to any “crafts”)

    Good luck!

    Congratulations!

All good suggestions and tips so far. Have 1000 or more business cards to hand out and hand them out. Will you need a sales tax license? Smile, good eye contact and engage people in conversation as they go by your booth. Thank everyone for looking-that’s when you hand them a business card. Also give out a business card with each sale. Keep a notebook handy to jot down thoughts, what to bring next time and ideas. Reduce your expenses by packing a lunch, snacks, water and munchies. Do not sit there looking forlorn or bored.

    Good luck
