Crochet experts… what’s my stitch? Other advice needed as well.?

My grandmother taught me how to crochet, a little, when I was a small child. A lot of it went way over my head, I’m sad to say.
I’m 34 years old now and taking a serious interest in the craft but I am SO overwhelmed on the abundance of info and the many different types… but that was after I crocheted a scarf for my 11 yo old daughter.
I always thought I was crocheting the “proper” way, but I’m having to relearn some things (mostly, what I call certain stitches: I always thought yarn over twice was a double crochet :) )
Also, I don’t crochet through two loops but only one.
Here’s a couple pics of the scarf. What have I actually been using (it’s the only stitch I comfortably know lol). I don’t know if you can tell by looking at it or not, but I figured I’d give it a try.

My ultimate goal is to be able to create a beautiful “Flower Motif Poncho”.
It’s advance pattern though :( and I don’t even understand the instructions: “Wind yarn around first finger to form a ring. Round 1 (RS): 5 ch, leaving last loop of each st on hook, work …..” I’m completely confused before I get any further lol Is the chain worked onto the ring or are they done outside the ring? And how can I leave the last loop of each stitch on the hook on a foundation chain?
I realize that pattern is (for now) WAY out of my league, but could someone please describe what it means so I can be better prepared in the future?

Many thanks.

Thanks everyone :)
I uploaded the image and instruction for the pattern I’m dying to learn how to make:

As I said- it’s WAY out of my league for now lol, but it gives me something to work toward :)

The photos appear to be a ch1, sc into sc of previous row, ch1, sc into ch1 space of previous row repeatedly. As for your instructions, it means to chain 5, then, as you work back into the chain, you keep one loop on your hook from each stitch to pull your thread through several loops probably at once, or a certain number of them repeatedly. This will give you a cluster or texture to your finished piece.

In answer to your first question regarding the double crochet, *yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through two loops*, is the double crochet normally used.

I have seen a woman do a double crochet the way you stated. I have done it that way and notice the look is very different. This would make for some interesting stitches.

As for the last question…I’d have to read the pattern to see if I could figure it out. The way I do a complicated stitch is by doing each individual step of the directions, then looking to see what the stitch is showing.

When I first started crocheting, I was ok until I started reading patterns. It took me a while to realize that the British stitches are different from North America .

The terminology is different and this link should help if this is the problem.
