Coloring over spray paint?

I am making my brother a gift box. I had been trying to find a colored cardboard box so that I can fill it and he can color/decorate the outside with crayons, stickers, markers, ect, himself. I couldn’t find any boxes, so I bought a brown cardboard hat box at a craft store with the intention of spray painting it blue. My question is: if I spray paint it, will it be possible to still color on it with crayons?

yes but make sure you seal the top paint coat or everything will peel/flake off

you may want to spray several coats of finish sealer on to provide strength so he can wipe off the crayons and draw something different

Not easily for the crayons, unless you spray only lightly with one of the paints (leaving tiny spaces of porous and rough cardboard showing). Perhaps a matte paint would work fine though, or you could lightly sand any glossy paint. Gesso (opaque white, or clear, preparation paint, which also provides a lot of “grab”) might work fine too.

Stickers would be fine on most paints, and markers would be fine if they’re permanent markers and if the surface isn’t too slick.

You could also paint around the edges like frame, but leave the cardboard free as a “chalkboard” for crayoning on?

    Cute idea!
