Can you make custom patterns for the Cricut cutting machines by Provo Craft?

I cant seem to find any thing that says you can make your own custom patterns for the cricut I would be using something like Adobe Illustrator

If the only way to use the cricut is with the preset cartages it makes no sense to buy this thing

   You can use a program called Sure Cuts a lot with your Cricut Machine. I love this program. It allows you to make so many things without any of the Cartages.
