Any arts and crafts ideas?

I need some ideas and things to do for my art classes. These kids get bored pretty easily and need some ideas to get them involved in art and not think i am a boring person. Can someone help with art activities for these kids to do. I teach kids grades kindergarten to 8th.

In 8th grade we made something that was like wood out of layered paper…..ha, I don’t know how to explain it. Mainly, we got a stack of construction paper, layered it in different colors. then used glue and water I think to glue each one to the other one, making sure there were NO air bubbles in it. Then let it dry. This part I don’t remember….I’m not sure if we just drew a shape and the shop teacher cut out the shapes with a jig saw or how it worked. But then we used files to file down to other colors in certain places and put a clear glossy coat on top. Then we made a little board as a base, and put a screw through the base into the sculpture.

I just found this picture and it looks so cool!

You could also have them make art by using tissue paper, bunching it up, then painting it onto posterboard with something clear(sorry, I don’t remember what we used) and use all different colors so it’s a textured painting-like thing. When you try to flatten out the tissue paper, it still is wrinkly and makes a texture. On mine, I used oil pastels on top and it looked kind-of cool.

Or magazine/newspaper frames/bowls are pretty popular right now. I think you just get magazine pages, and paint one side with elmer’s glue and roll it up. Maybe a 1/2 sheet would work better? Here’s a vase which would be hard to make but I’m sure it could be done if you make it before the glue dries http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=16507485&navAction=jump&isProduct=true&parentid=MORE%20IDEAS&isProduct=true&cross-sell=true&guide-bn=true but you could just use a basic wood frame and decorate that with the magazine things.

Do a recycled art project. Have them bring in items from home, divide into groups, then have them make a project all the items the kids in the group brought (or divide up items as you feel fit). This can both make them work together and give them incentive to use their imagination. Also see http://www.make-stuff.com/recycling/index.html

How about painting a design on a glass jar, pitcher, bowl ect

Get clay, and have them make animals, bowls, ect

Or weaving, either basket weaving, or placemats, belts ect

Or what about doing We are Thinking of you cards for the troops. You can adopt a soldier or platoon

Have you asked the kids what they might like to do?
